Challenges of Managing Data in the Cloud

Cloud computing adoption has been a growing trend in enterprise settings over the last several years
and one of the top drivers is definitively efficient data management. Cloud-based systems provide
advanced solutions for processing big databases at low costs, which is why most CIOs are attracted
to their potential. As even the small businesses generate large amounts of digital data, powerful
technology has become a precondition for faster growth of every contemporary business.
However, being an innovative kind of computing infrastructure as it is, cloud poses certain challenges
when it comes to managing data. These challenges are primarily related to the heterogeneous data
structures in companies that operate on hybrid or public clouds, which may make their management
quite complex. Once a company outsources cloud applications, it becomes dependent on the service
vendor and this scenario leads to the following issues.

Loss of control
Though cloud represents a cost-effective solution for storing large amounts of data, organization
managers usually don’t feel very comfortable with transferring so much responsibility over their data
to external cloud providers. This form of dependence means that company’s applications need to work
in line with the ones provided by a cloud vendor and this is a setting many companies still need to get
used to. Ever since the cloud expansion has started, industry experts have been pointing to the fact that
the concordance between workload on private servers and in public cloud is manageable but in most
companies, it may take some time until it is fully achieved.

Workload distribution
Public cloud is not suitable for all types of workload and companies need to assess their data and
decide
upon the applications that need to be outsourced from cloud providers. Hybrid cloud infrastructure
makes it possible to distribute workload across both private and public servers, which is a convenient
option for many large enterprises. Hybrid cloud is one of the most popular forms of IT infrastructure
because it provides both security and computing power. Still, the problem for CIOs may be deciding
upon the sets of applications that would be run on each. Usually, the most sensitive data will remain in-
house but this still means that companies need to adjust their strategies to achieve the perfect balance
between the workload on private machines and public cloud servers.

Service performance
According to Vikkas Aggarwal, CEO of Zyrion, "One of biggest
challenges enterprises are facing today is that when service performance degrades they are not able
to easily determine whether the service-impacting fault is within an external cloud component or an
internal enterprise network component." This shared responsibility involves enhanced communication
between a company and a cloud vendor, so that the potential problems can be solved in minimum time.
Also, such scenarios frequently require management specialists who have years of experience working
in similar environments, especially in the companies that are new to the cloud infrastructure.
Clearly, there are many challenges that companies can face when migrating to the new infrastructure
and most contemporary IT pros are aware of this. However complex it may appear, managing data in
the cloud is doable, even if it requires some time for company to develop efficient strategies.
