On the 26th of November, Tianhe-1,
nicknamed milkyway 1 was revealed to
the public as the 5th fastest
super-computer and between October 2010 to June 2011 it had a little upgrade
(Tianhe-1A) to stay as the fastest computer in the world with a sped of 2.566
petaflops. The Tianhe-1A which comprises of 112 computer cabinets, 12 storage
cabinets, 6 communication cabinets and 8 I/O cabinets was developed by the Chinese National
University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in Changsha, Human got overthrown as
the fastest computer by the Japan developed K computer (“kei” which means 10
quadrillion)
Now the Chinese are it again with the new Tianhe-2
super computer also known as milkyway 2 which operates at a speed of 30.7
petaflops per second.
The super-computer which runs kylin linux is to be
unveiled at the international super-computing conference next week has been
declared to likely stay at the Top 500 super-computers list with its incredible
speed.
Tianhe-2 is
to be conveyed to the Chinese National Super-computer centre in Changsha by the
end of the year so as to enable use in processing large data, simulation for testing
airplanes and aids in governmental research and security with its storage of
12.4PB and a total memory of 1.4PB; 32000 Intel ivy bridge xeon sockets and a
48000 xeon phi boards to arrive at a total of 312000 cores according to the
university of Tennessee professor, Prof. Jack Dongara.
