What to expect from the next stage in Smartphone technology

del.icio.us Tags: ,,,

Now that the Smartphone manufacturers have caught up with the iPhone, they are now able to compete on a more level playing ground. The competition has never been so fierce, which is why so many improvements and advancements are coming onto the market with such frequency. There is a lot of money to be made with Smartphones because they are relatively cheap to make compared to desktop computers and yet are charged at the same price. Here are a few things you should look out for in the future.

Transparency:
This has been a long time coming and you can look online right now and see a few transparent gadgets. But, they have not really hit the open market with any force yet. Transparent TVs are not selling as thick and fast as 3D TVs, and transparent Smartphones are not as popular as manufacturers hoped. But, each year we see a slightly different transparent phone enter the arena at trade shows and conventions, indicating that they are probably going to feature heavily in the future.

True 4G Internet:
Communications experts out there will tell you that real 4G Internet is not yet available in the US. Even phones that are set up to receive 4G are still using 3G Internet. Broadband Internet is not yet available, and 4G is actually using a 3G standard at the moment. So, 4G is basically whatever marketing companies say it is until true mobile broadband becomes widely available.

Better cameras:
In the race to usurp the competition, people are putting more and more advanced cameras into Smartphones. The most obvious example comes from Samsung who have put a 13MP camera in their new Smartphone. More MP on a Smartphone does mean it is possible to take better photos than if you use a lesser MP camera on a Smartphone, but photography is not just about MP. Handheld cameras are still beating Smartphone cameras in most cases. Still, Smartphone manufacturers are going to keep improving Smartphone cameras into the near future.

Faster processing:
This is another thing that Smartphone manufacturers are doing in order to beat the competition. It is now more of a race to see who can provide the most processing power and install more CPUs into devices. The current best is an eight-core processor, but this will undoubtedly be beaten in the near future as manufacturers push the envelope more and more.

More hard drive memory:
The hard drive memory capacity of Smartphones is going up every year. Smartphones with the memory capacity of tablet devices are already on the market. There is also a strong feeling that one of the manufactures is going to release a Smartphone with a hard drive containing over 100GB of space in the near future.

More sensitive touch screen interfaces:
Touch screen technology seems to improve every year. Being able to touch the screen in more than one place is becoming a common Smartphone standard. There are now touch screens that are so sensitive that they can even be used if you are wearing thin cotton gloves. Logic dictates that touch screen technology is going to continue to advance at the same pace it has done over the last few years.

Longer lasting batteries
Batteries are what make up most of the weight on many Smartphones, which is why some manufacturers have created more efficient machines and batteries so that they can shrink them down and make thinner devices. The race for the thinnest device seems to have slowed down now, as getting any thinner is going to become impracticable. But, the race for better batteries and more energy efficient machines is still raging as manufacturers try to extend the usable power time of Smartphones.

More geo located information for users:
This is a combination of more information being entered into online software, and a combination of geo-location technology being more present and accurate within Smartphone devices. It is now common for people to use their Smartphones to navigate and find businesses, etc, so it seems only logical that technology will keep pushing forwards to make this easier and more convenient.

Text-to-voice and Voice-to-text:
This technology already exists but is not perfect and can become annoying. Google have made great steps in improving this technology for use in their Google Glasses. These are a pair of glasses that you wear that are crammed with technology that allows you to navigate and take images and videos. It is essentially a small Smartphone that is built into a pair of glasses. The technology relies heavily on voice commands, so no doubt voice command technology is going to improve in all mobile devices.

Better typing functions:
This is an area that simply has to improve because typing into mobile devices is still the pet peeve of many mobile device users. Tablets that turn into mini laptops have been created for tablets, but there is still a way to go for Smartphone technology.
